Writers’ Group goes out on the town…

Triangle Writers is a serious group. We work really hard and slave away week after week and month after month–trying to improve our writing. 🙂 Ok, well we do work really hard, but we most always have fun while doing it.

This week, we had a big outing. Anyone who knows me (or knows someone who knows me) — KNOWS how much I love Green Day. I mean – LOVE Green Day. The band is my inspiration. When American Idiot was made into a musical and went to Broadway–I went, too. Several times.

Then, when I found out the touring version of the Broadway show would stop here in little boring Raleigh, I really wanted to share it with my fellow creative friends–and they were all game. Most were not really familiar with the music, but they are all so awesome and open that they agreed to go to the show just because I loved it so much. (love you guys!)

From the official site (http://americanidiotthemusical.com/about.php):

Direct from Broadway, the smash-hit musical AMERICAN IDIOT tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Their quest for true meaning in a post 9/11 world leads them on the most exhilarating theatrical journey of the season.

Based on Green Day’s GRAMMY® Award-winning multi-platinum album, AMERICAN IDIOT boldly takes the American musical where it’s never gone before. The result is an experience Charles Isherwood¬¬ of The New York Times declares “thrilling, emotionally charged, and as moving as any Broadway musical I’ve seen this year!”

We invited spouses and significant others and made it a night complete with a nice dinner (yummy blue cheese mac and cheese!) and spirits (orange blossom!). I am not sure everyone enjoyed the show — but I do think we all enjoyed being together and having a night where we weren’t critting or chatting about plot!

If you are in a writing group and you don’t do the occasional social thing, I certainly encourage you to get out and do it sometimes–it’s a terrific stress reliever. 🙂  And if you get a chance to see the touring show of American Idiot–it comes with my highest recommendation!

Here’s a pic of four of us at the end of the night. Two of the guys had already headed home. 🙂

Lady Jane’s Salon Raleigh

Last night, I attended the Raleigh/Durham branch of the Lady Jane’s Salon to hear readings by three fabulous authors: Becky Moore, who read from Guardian Angel; Marcia Colette, who read from Hazardous Environment; and Catherine Gayle, who read from Twice a Rake. I really enjoyed hearing books read aloud–what a great opportunity to hear how writing sounds in the writer’s own voice? (and how do you punctuate that… ) So cool to hear what the writer expected the sentences to sound like. Very nice!

And Marcia’s karaoke wasn’t so bad, either. Give that girl a mic. Be afraid.

The salon is held in a nice little pub–we met in a separate room. Great pub fare (I had fish and chips). Hey, pints were $4. Too bad I was driving. Next time, I plan to arrange a ride so I can have a pint.

I met lots of awesome peeps! Valerie! Becky! Dominique! Marcia! Mari!

I hope these types of readings spread–and I hope, as authors, if you get the chance to do a reading–you will! It really is an amazing way for the reader to look inside your book.

The next Lady Jane’s Salon will be February 29th! I hope some of you can make it! (I will be at Hermit Week…) Click on the postcard to link to the Lady Jane’s site:

End of year…

So it is the end of 2011… sigh. I love being home with family and waiting on the ball drop in NYC (hope to be there next year for the big moment!). At least it is warm and cozy in front of my tv and I don’t have to go far to find a clean bathroom…

Still catching up on blog regenerating… and re-announcing my announcements for the last few months as I drag over my old posts and refresh them. Here we go:

I sold a short! Yay! SENATOR, MINE–a time travel–to Decadent Publishing’s 1 Night Stand series. I am so excited. As soon as I saw the series and read a few books, I was hooked and wanted to write a story. The rest is history. Ancient Roman history. No word on a pub date or anything, but I will update as I get details. Definitely a happy day when I got the contract.

If you aren’t familiar with the series, you can check it out here: http://www.decadentpublishing.com/index.php?cPath=75_105  There are a lot of really great authors contributing stories to the series and you can get just about any flavor story! Pick up one or five to read! I promise you won’t be disappointed. 🙂
